Diamond Hogs

Before theNBA finals start, I thought I should give a shout out to the hogs.

The Arkansas Razorback Baseball team is going to the Super Regional down in Tallahassee, FL. We won the regional 3-0 and hope to back to the College World Series for the first time since 2004. We're playing Florida State in Tallahassee and they're the team we beat last time to get into the CWS.

One last hog call before the Magic and Lakers tip-off.

No Need For A Rule Book

http://myespn.go.com/blogs/truehoop/0-38-270/NBA-Traveling---We-Really-Don-t-Reference-the-Rulebook-.html

Making The Case

Ok. We need to start small. That's how you fix a big problem. How the NBA functions is a problem. How the refs officiate is a problem. How arenas are named is a problem. But The Big Problem is that David Stern does not care.

Let's get to the basics:

The players get away with rule breaking on a nightly basis. A Superstar players get away with double that. And an ESPN poll from a while back had an 20/80% (yes/no) "should the superstar get the call?", so most of the fans voting on that poll were in agreement that Superstars should NOT get the benefit of the doubt.

The rate at which players commit travel and dribble violations in the NBA is sickening. I'm not sure where the transition began, but the officiating shifted. Refs used to call traveling. And on more than just the "scrub" players, too. You see guys take three steps in the open court on a way to a dunk, switch/pick-up a pivot foot on spin moves, carry the ball way above their heads on fast-breaks, crab-dribbles, etc.

High flying dunks and "hot-dog" passes are great. They are beautiful and fluid. But to see the player take numerous baby-steps, that third extra step, or a palm just to pull it off, takes the awe of the play away. What is a dunk in an NBA game if the player takes a running start or "carries" it? Somewhere along the way, the NBA game has turned into a loosely officiated all-star game. (Except the 120+ points are not getting put up)

Something to think about: what happens if you took the NBA style of officiating and put into the the two other major U.S. sports?

NFL

-the quarterback routinely runs past the line of scrimmage during the game and throws touchdown after touchdown (excluding review by replay)

MLB

-a player hits a ball foul, the runner on first steals 2nd, he stays on 2nd and is credited with a stolen base (excluding review by replay)
